Kitchen Table Conversations: Why be a Teacher?

In a time of shrinking employment opportunities, increased pressures from policymakers, and what some classify as an attack on the teaching profession, Minnesota still has thousands of young people eager to get their license and teach.

Minnesota 2020 sat down with a soon-to-be licensed teacher about what motivates, empowers and concerns her about entering the classroom.

    The question was not answered in the interview: Why be a teacher?

    If you want to be a teacher these days, you probably are altruistic.

    If you want to be a teacher these days, you probably need to be able to tolerate criticism.

    If you want to be a teacher these days, you probably need to be able to work with inadequate leadership and resources.

    If you want to be a teacher these days, you will have put up with the cynicism in our school systems, communities, and this comment.
